Sigalit Landau on Barbed Hula
This act of desensitization – spinning a hula-hoop of barbed wire – I performed at sunrise on a Southern beach of Tel-Aviv. The beach is the only calm and natural border Israel has. All my work relates, in one way or another, to borders and a loss of orientation. The pain here is escaped by the speed of the act, and the fact that the spikes of the barbed wire are mostly turned outwards.
At the time of planning Barbed Hula, I was living in Berlin, sleeping at an artist residency in the cellar of a contemporary art collection in Berlin, Mitte. I had never made video art before. I shot myself dancing at the end of a short visit to Israel in 1998. Due to lack of funds – I was baking bread in a restaurant in London by then – I edited this work more than a year or two after shooting it.
My Body was the only thing I felt that I [sometimes] had. The home I wished to establish was one containing subjectivity and not members and memories of my objective factual upbringing, places, family, political conflicts, history and circumstances. This assumption often made by young artists, is why the working title for Barbed Hula was “Nest”. Nest I never did, salt angels cannot. Migration, nomads, homelessness, shifting borders and identities were central terms in the discourses of the art world and the “ambiance” in the nineties.
I am not an abject artist and my art is not dealing with abject but yearning, stories and desire. There is no blood or bleeding, nor any other body fluids or substances in the work in which I use my own body. Meanings do not collapse, buildings, people and relationships do; orientation may. Barbed Hula is an act of love and desire.
Desire is life. Death is not ambiguous. Survival makes you weak and not strong. Occupying another nation does the same. If and when beauty ends and death starts to take hold, we know we are in trouble.
