In Colombia, decades of armed conflict have left millions of victims across five major human rights violations: homicide, forced disappearance, kidnapping, child recruitment, and forced displacement. In 2018, the Observatory of Memory and Conflict reported 15,687 victims of sexual violence within this context. Today, the most recent Unified Registry of Victims (RUV) reveals an alarming rise—documenting 32,446 cases of violence against sexual freedom and integrity. Women and girls make up 92% of all victims. These acts were committed by paramilitary groups, guerrilla forces, and state actors.
And yet, according to Colombia’s National Center for Historical Memory, it is far more common for armed groups to admit to murder than to acknowledge acts of sexual violence. Many women live under threat—facing potential retaliation against themselves or their families—simply for daring to tell the truth.
„Sexual violence is perhaps the most forgotten and silenced form of violence used by armed actors. No group openly admits to raping, harassing, or forcing someone into prostitution. It’s easier to confess to forced displacement, dispossession, or even murder. But sexual violence is cloaked in deep moral condemnation—not for the victims, but for the perpetrators.“
— National Center for Historical Memory
Every time a woman chooses to speak, to share her truth, she puts her life on the line.
Can someone truly tell the truth knowing it could cost her everything?
It is never easy to admit that we have been victims of sexual violence. And yet, there are courageous women—living survivors of war—who have risked everything to raise their voices and speak out. Through their testimonies, shared with the world, we bear witness. Their stories are explored through the lens of artistic practice—intimately, strategically, and unapologetically.
Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of meeting some of these women and building bonds of trust with them. Witnessing how they have emerged from the trauma of war—realities too often ignored from a place of comfort—has deeply moved and inspired me. I feel a profound responsibility to amplify their voices, to give visibility to their truth through my art.
To speak the truth is to declare: I am alive.
When a woman tells her story, she creates an echo—an echo of hope for others still in silence. That echo has the power to transform collective consciousness.
The Chalice of Truth: Not a Minute of Silence for Them is a gender-focused project that weaves together photography and sound, nature and language, with the female body as a living archive. The women’s stories are presented in a continuous, immersive loop—inviting visitors to listen, feel, and see what these survivors have to say. I believe that part of the process of reparation lies in keeping their stories alive and supporting their journey of healing.
That is why a portion of the funds raised through this project will go toward establishing a psycho-emotional support program for survivors. Based in Madrid, Spain, this initiative will provide care and resources for women affected by sexual violence in the context of armed conflict—helping them transform pain into new possibilities for life.
This project is by women, for women.
It honors those who have not yet found the strength to speak, and uplifts those who are beginning to do so with courage.
Telling these stories, making them visible, and affirming their humanity is a path toward liberation—because the truth will set us free.
Thank you for joining hands with us.
Thank you for believing in healing and new beginnings.
Thank you for considering being part of this project.
Let’s build a bridge between us.
Together, we are empowered.

Juanita Díaz Torres is a visual artist specialized in Plastic Expression from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. She is a TEDx speaker, certified Life Management Coach, and holds a Master’s degree in Art Markets and Business Management from Universidad Nebrija. She has been recognized as one of Bogotá’s 50 Transformational Leaders and was featured among the “16 Inspiring Stories of Women in Colombia” by the United Nations Population Fund (UN WOMEN).
She has participated in national television debates and served as a voice in the Bogotá City Council. Her story and work have been featured in international and national media such as EL PAÍS, VICE Magazine, Caracol Radio, and RCN Television, among others.
In 2011, during her university years, Juanita experienced sexual abuse by a fellow student—an event that catalyzed a profound personal, artistic, and social transformation. Her creative practice began as an intimate exploration beyond words—through painting, marble sculpture, engraving, drawing, and piano composition. Over time, this evolved into collective actions as a form of social transformation.
In 2015, she composed the song DESPEGAS – TAKE OFF, launching a weekly public action every Thursday in front of the location where the assault occurred. Supported by teachers, lawyers, and members of the wider community, this initiative sparked broader conversations and engagement across Bogotá.
This is how she founded P of Persistance (I de Insistencia)—an organization offering professional support and educational strategies for survivors of sexual violence, both within and outside the context of Colombia’s armed conflict. Today, she is establishing a new organization, FLORA, based in Madrid, Spain.
Juanita has exhibited her work in Spain, Colombia, and Mexico. For the past four years, she has been living in Madrid, fully dedicated once again to her artistic journey—one grounded in resilience, truth, and the transformative power of creative expression.
